Milestone FAQ
Milestone FAQ
(English version at bottom of this page)
2. Milestone
4. Milestone
5. Milestone
8. Milestone

Milestone Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. What is Milestone?
Milestone is a skating event (not a competition) originally designed for children aged 4 to 6 years old. The entry barrier is very low—even beginners enrolled in Class Q with zero experience can participate. Simply put, Milestone is an activity where children skate around a 330-meter (or 100-meter, depending on the venue) loop for one hour to see how many laps they can complete (results are not announced). When the number of laps reaches certain thresholds (based on the child’s skill level), they can be exchanged for small gifts. The child gets to pick gifts from a prize box. For example, this is what Milestone looked like in 2024: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gKfgGClZPk
2. What is the purpose of Milestone?
The main goal of Milestone is to help children gain a sense of accomplishment early on—this is key to developing a lasting interest. For children, Milestone serves as an annual review of their skating progress, a "flavor booster" for routine lessons, and a stepping stone toward regular skating events. It also functions as an endurance exercise, similar to a marathon for adults, and has proven health benefits. Kids are smart—they won't push themselves to the point of exhaustion. Milestone allows parents to witness their child turning the so-called "impossible" into the possible. This motivation, proven over many years, is what drives us to continue hosting Milestone annually.
3. My child just started skating. I'm worried they skate too slowly and won't get any gifts. Can we still sign up?
New parents often worry that their child is too slow—this is completely unnecessary. Gift thresholds are calculated based on each child’s usual performance. For example, if a fast child typically completes 50 laps during a class, they may need to skate about 2.3 kilometers to earn a gift on Milestone day. If another child usually does only 5 laps, then every 0.2 kilometers could earn them a gift. In the end, most children, regardless of speed, usually earn 5–7 gifts depending on how they perform that day. Milestone was designed primarily for beginners. It is not a competition but an inclusive activity where everyone can skate for an hour, regardless of skill level. The number of laps is recorded but not announced or ranked.
4. How is the gift lap threshold calculated?
At Velodrome venues (330m per lap, calibration used since 2021), the approximate formula (not exact) is: max laps during class ÷ 6, and the group number becomes the gift lap threshold.
At 100m loop venues (used from 2014–2019), children are grouped based on class performance. The formula is: half the average of the group’s top lap counts.
Example: In one group, three children’s top lap counts are 32, 33, and 35.
Average = (32+33+35)/3 = 33.33
Half = 33.33/2 ≈ 16.67 → Rounded down to 16 laps per gift.
There are usually about 6 groups in total. The grouping introduces mild intra-group competition, and children can choose their gifts. If they skate faster, they can pick earlier.
5. How many gifts does each child usually receive?
On average, each child receives about 6 gifts. There are also other small keepsakes.
6. Why is on-site registration not accepted on event day?
Milestone requires extensive prep work:
Pre-calculating each child’s gift lap thresholds
Programming the lap-counting system
Ordering gifts based on expected need
Customizing trophies engraved with each child’s name
These cannot be changed on-site, so no same-day registration is allowed.
7. How can my child qualify to participate in Milestone?
They must have a student ID for the current year. This event is open only to students in the skating classes (Groups A–Q) and adult class for that year. It is not open to the public.
8. What is the Milestone venue like?
It’s a 330-meter or 100-meter loop track (depending on the venue). From 2021 to 2024, it has been held on a 330-meter track at Major Taylor Velodrome. Venues include professional tracks or wide parking lots in parks (minimum 6 meters wide), with electronic lap counters, a gift station, and space for parents to observe.
9. How is the Milestone date determined each year?
Generally, it takes place in early to mid-August—on the last Sunday of summer break or the first Sunday after school starts. Starting in 2024, the event is scheduled for the first week after school resumes.
10. Why does the hosting family change every year?
Since the second year, Milestone has adopted a rotating host system. Reasons include:
Keeping the event fresh by introducing new ideas
Making it more inclusive; volunteer hosts gain a deeper appreciation and sense of belonging
Hosts volunteer rather than being assigned. When registering, families can indicate if they want to host. The host-to-child ratio is about 1:5 to 1:10. For example, with 40 children, there would be 5–8 host families. This ensures enough manpower even in the worst-case scenario. Hosts are mainly responsible for buying and distributing gifts. If too many families apply, a drawing is held. If not enough apply, the event is canceled.
To pass on experience, the previous year’s hosts become advisors but are not required to host again. Hosting families can be new or returning.
11. We are new to the skating class and don’t know how to host a Milestone.
Hosting families mainly buy and distribute gifts. Previous years have detailed records of what to buy, prices, and where to purchase. Just get the gifts and hand them out on the event day—that completes your main task. Guidelines and documentation from past years are available to follow.
12. How many host families are needed each year?
Roughly 1 host family per 5–10 children. Typically 4–10 families.
Examples:
1st year: 4 hosts
2nd year: 4 hosts
3rd year: 6 hosts
4th year: 5 hosts
6th year: 10 hosts
